The expansive building on La Cienega that was once Gonpachi is now Shan Social House, a reservations only restaurant that focuses on chuka cuisine, or Japanese-style Chinese food. Quietly open since late February, the temple-like eatery has been cleaned up and refined, but not completely transformed from its former glory as an over-the-top dining space. As for the new menu, consider beef carpaccio, black bean noodles, tempura, and high-end shabu shabu priced up to $128. Getting into the restaurant isn’t exactly intuitive, as it requires a voicemail left at the restaurant’s phone number. Hours run Wednesday to Sunday, 5 to 11 p.m.
